In the world of fasteners and latches, there are so many options available to choose from. However, the application will determine what type of fastener you need and what materials you need it to be manufactured from. For example, if you’re looking to secure a case then a box fastener, also known as a toggle latch, would be a great solution. Although, if you’re looking to secure a hose or pipe then you will need to use a fastener that accommodates a diameter rather than a flat surface. In terms of your options when securing the diameter of an object, band clamps or hose clips are your best bet. You will find that these terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference between the two. In this blog, we’ll look at the difference between hose clips and bandclamps and learn about how you can buy both products online.
A hose clip also referred to as a worm drive hose clip, pipe clip or Jubilee clip, is predominantly used to attach tubing or a hose onto another fixture. The name Jubilee Clip is a brand name of a hose clip. Worm drive hose clips typically feature a smooth inside diameter to prevent damage to the hose and a worm drive tightening mechanism that provides a strong grip. Hose clips are available in a wide range of sizes to fit different hose diameters and can be purchased online through Protex. Manufactured by Jubilee and supplied by Protex, these hose clips are available in mild steel or stainless steel and are suitable for diameters ranging from 9.5mm to 292mm. High-torque hose clips are also available.
The main factor that differentiates a hose clip from a bandclamp is the method in which they apply pressure and clamp down. Hose clamps feature a slotted band which works in conjunction with a threaded screw to tighten the clamp. Simply set the hose clip in place and begin to turn the screw which will move the geared housing along the band until it is secure.
Although they provide a similar solution for clamping diameters, the fastening mechanism for bandclamps is different to hose clips. They still feature the slotted band and screw for diameter adjustment but use a quick release over centre fasteners and catchplates (also known as keeper plates) to hold the clamp in place. Depending on the bandclamp type, they can use a non-adjustable or spring-loaded fastener which will allow for use in different applications. This fastening method is what differentiates bandclamps from hose clips. The ability to remove and fit bandclamps so quickly and frequently is a major benefit, especially for ongoing maintenance operations.
At Protex, we manufacture and supply quick-release bandclamps that are ideal for applications that require frequent use. For example, when used in industrial processing or maintenance where there is a requirement to quickly change filter bags or tubing. Our range of bandclamps consists of a rigid claw, spring claw (usually used on vibratory applications) , heavy duty and quick-release bandclamp, it even features ones with safety catches. Manufactured from mild steel or stainless steel, these bandclamps are suitable for diameters from 24mm to 695mm.
